Sai Sogadu – a good Uttara Karnataka food place in Bangalore

Ever since I had seen appreciation for this place almost 8 months ago, I had planned to visit this place in Rajajinagar. Last week, me and my friend had to visit, but we turned to OG Variar Bakery. Today, I went to this place and wrongly went to their “North Indian and Chinese” division. This is why here we say: to get food one must have a connection and be deserving.

As we get down from the Rajajinagar metro, we get two restaurants on either side. To your left would be Sai Sogadu North Indian & Chinese division. To your right would be the one serving Uttara Karnataka and South Indian cuisine. At the North Indian division, I took “veg pulao” which had good fresh beans, carrot and peas. Neatly made and was served well with raitha, salad and pickles. Neat service and well maintained clean place.

Sai Sogadu, Rajajinagar, Bangalore

After learning about their original Uttara Karnataka & South Indian division, I went there. I was confused about what to have. The menu displayed on the screen  was elaborate. They had kept a sample of most items on display. First I asked for “coconut pudding” which was not available. So I ordered “coconut payasa” which cost me Rs. 50. It was cool and tasted simple and nice. In this summer heat, I was able to quench my thirst.

Coconut Payasa

I spent some 5 minutes thinking what to order. Next, I ordered “Rotti Palya” (Rs. 90) and “Shreekhand Shot” (Rs. 80). Rotti Palya took some time since they make the jowar rotis (corn roti / ಜೋಳದ ರೊಟ್ಟಿ) fresh. They served it with two sabzi – brinjal sabzi (ಬದನೆಕಾಯಿ ಎಣ್ಣೆಗಾಯಿ / ಪಲ್ಯ) and chickpeas sabzi. The brinjal sabzi was a bit more spicy for my palette. They added some “shenga”powder  (groundnut) and that elevated the taste. The chickpeas sabzi was also good. They gave mirchi bajji, cucumber and one more item in the plate.

Jolada Rotti & Palya. Shreekhand Shot

The shreekhand shot was very good. Little bit of almond flakes topping. Shreekhand had elaichi added for good taste. However, I found this item to be too sweet for my palette. I feel they can give less quantity, so that we don’t feel too sweet.

Sogadu in Kannada means “fragrance or taste”. Good name. Also, the Uttara Karnataka food is different from the south Karnataka cuisine. They use slightly different ingredients and the raw materials used are the ones grown and a available in North Karnataka region and suits that climatic  conditions. Be it peanuts (shenga), jowar (jola or corn) are all grown more in North Karnataka regions.

They have kept many packed snacks items, laddus, karadantu etc. I think next time, I should go empty stomach and try their shenga holige and other items. They have so many items to offer. Well maintained and clean. If you sit on the other side of the restaurant, you can feel the “residential area” vibes and less traffic on the other side. Check the image below.
