Summer nights

Back in my childhood… When we moved to this house, our area was less populated. Less houses, less people, no vehicles at all after 7pm, no shops and amenities. The last bus was around 8:45 or 9pm!

Summers used to be sunny and summer nights would be hot. But after 8 or 9pm, sometimes during April time, we would get some good cool wind. So we would sit outside after our dinner to get some cool air.

As we sat outside, we would hear the sound of a dramatic performance that would happen in a neighbouring village, which bordered our area! In fact, our area didn’t have a separate post office for a long time. Our letters had to be collected from the same village post office. During summers, the people of this village would join together and practice some epic dramas and perform for a week with mic on. Since there were less houses, that sound would directly reach our house. At times, my mother could even identify the drama or dialogues (usually a scene from Ramayana). She recalled the mythological dramas she watched in her village.

With more houses getting built in the way, the sound no more travels easily to our place. So we cannot hear much. During Covid summer,  this drama was not done. In the last few years, their drama performances have reduced a lot.

Tonight we sat outside enjoying the cool wind… No noise, just cool air!
