One man one vote – Mandela

I watched Mandela (Tamil) recently on Netflix and it gave a glimpse of the caste politics and violence in Tamil Nadu (a South Indian state). The whole movie is set in a village named “Soorangudi” where the people are divided between two caste lines – North People and South People. The leader of the village – Periya Ayya (means senior leader) is a follower of Periyar and has married two women belonging to the two competing castes of the village.…

For Mysoreans, city means the places around KR Circle like - City bus stand, Devaraja Market, Sayyaji Rao Road and D Devaraj Urs road. Whenever Mysoreans went to the city area and were tired doing the shopping in the hot sun or during summers, we would usually hit this place called "Phalamrutha" (phala - fruit. Amrutha - nectar). The real meaning of – “Get out of your comfort zone”

We often hear people saying, "get out of your comfort zone". These are the same people who believe that nothing good happens if you are doing your life happily without any tensions. Yes, once in a while, it is important to come out of our comfort zones and upgrade ourselves when there is a real need for it. Is the new technology replacing experts?

Think of the times 10-15 years ago. You probably consumed good quality news from standard newspapers like The Hindu and Deccan Herald. If you were keen on entertainment and bollywood, you would be reading Times of India. Times of India was known as a relatively substandard newspaper. Some people referred to it as the "toilet paper of India". There were advertisements where The Hindu made fun of youngsters reading The Times of India. The advertisement showed how the readers of…

Wrong grammar getting normalised “already”, “anyways” who cares?

Almost 10-15 years ago, I came across the phrase, "anyways" being used by the youngsters. I even remember in one movie Kareena Kapoor saying, "anyways girls..." I remember some Video Jockeys (VJs) from MTV and Channel V saying "anyways". I felt this was grammatically wrong. But in a few months, this got normalised. But I don't see people using this phrase nowadays. Some one or two years ago, I came across the word "already" being used in the wrong way.…

How Mozilla Firefox revolutionized the way we explore the internet

When I first started using the internet, I used to browse through Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Netscape. Netscape was just dying then. And I shifted to Internet Explorer completely. Internet explorer had many issues. One big issue was what we called as "pop up ads". Pop up ads would literally pop up randomly while you browsed any website. There were many websites that promoted advertisements through pop ups. Almost every website used pop up ads to make some money. These…
